Nashville is actively pursuing environmental sustainability through a combination of government initiatives and community-driven projects. These efforts aim to preserve the city’s natural resources, reduce its environmental footprint, and enhance resilience against climate change.
Government Initiatives
Environmental Stewardship
The Mayor’s Office has outlined several key initiatives to protect and expand Nashville’s natural environment. These include:
- Tree Canopy Expansion: Legislation mandates the management of trees on public property as assets, with regular progress reports and a review panel overseeing large-scale removals. Additionally, a dedicated revenue stream supports tree canopy restoration on private properties, aiming to plant 500,000 trees by 2050.
- Parks and Greenways: The ‘Plan to Play’ master plan provides a ten-year vision to sustainably meet Nashville’s needs for park land, greenways, community centers, and sports facilities.
Climate Resilience
Recognizing the increasing risks from severe weather events due to climate change, Nashville is focusing on climate resilience. This involves preparing and modifying the built environment and its supporting systems to withstand and recover rapidly from climate-driven disruptions.
Zero Waste Initiative
In December 2019, Nashville’s Solid Waste Region Board approved a Solid Waste Master Plan aiming to divert 90% of the city’s waste away from landfills. The plan emphasizes reducing, reusing, recycling, and composting to achieve this goal.
Community Efforts
Urban Green Lab
Urban Green Lab is a nonprofit organization dedicated to teaching communities how to live sustainably. They offer programs that have reached 49% of Davidson County zip codes and served 499 organizations as of 2025.
Nashville Earth Day
Centennial Park Conservancy hosts Nashville’s official Earth Day celebration, featuring over 75 exhibitors and vendors, live music, educational demonstrations, and more. Proceeds from the event support local environmental projects, with $208,000 donated since 2020.
Downtown Arboretum
Launched in May 2025, the Nashville Downtown Arboretum showcases over 3,000 trees along sidewalks and public areas, enhancing the city’s urban tree canopy. This initiative is a collaboration between the Nashville Downtown Partnership and the Nashville Department of Transportation.
Through these combined efforts, Nashville is making significant strides toward environmental sustainability, demonstrating a strong commitment to preserving its natural resources and fostering a resilient community.
